During the Cold War
Between 1945 and 1990, more than 70,000 total warheads were developed, in over 65 different
varieties, ranging in yield from around .01 kilotons (such as the man-portable
Davy Crockett shell) to the 25 megaton B41 bomb.]
Between 1940 and 1996, the U.S. spent at least $8.75 trillion in present-day terms on nuclear
weapons development. Over half was spent on building delivery mechanisms for the
weapon. $549 billion in present day terms was spent on nuclear waste management
and environmental remediation.

COLD WAR
1917– 1929 Communists (Stalin and Bolsheviks) take control of Russia
1946-1949 "Iron Curtain" descends on Europe- East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria- called the
Communist Bloc
1921-1949 Communists ( Mao) take control of China
1949-1950 Communists (Kim Il Sung) take control of North Korea
1941-1954 Communists (Ho Chi Minh) take control of North Vietnam
1959 Communists (Castro) take control of Cuba
Space Race 1957-1975
Oct. 4, 1957 Soviets use an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile to put satellite Sputnik into orbit.
1958 First American satellite in space
1960 A CIA spy plane (U2) shot down over Russia
1961 first Russian, then later, first American in space
Focus on space program to put nuclear warheads on ICBM’s 50% of U.S. arsenal is on ICBM (silos, trucks and bomber-launched cruise missiles).
50% of U.S. arsenal is on nuclear powered submarines-SSBN’s
Trident class "boomers"- 18 subs carry 24 missiles having 8 warheads each,
MIRV’ed (Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles) with 475 kiloton yield each
1970’s Strategic Defense Initiative (AKA Star Wars) shoot down enemy ICBM’s
launched against us. (Low success factor)
During the Cold War
Between 1945 and 1990, more than 70,000 total warheads were developed, in over 65 different
varieties, ranging in yield from around .01 kilotons (such as the man-portable
Davy Crockett shell) to the 25 megaton B41 bomb.]
Between 1940 and 1996, the U.S. spent at least $8.75 trillion in present-day terms on nuclear
weapons development. Over half was spent on building delivery mechanisms for the
weapon. $549 billion in present day terms was spent on nuclear waste management
and environmental remediation.
